Ranikhet or “Queens Field” was bought by British Raj for its
empire in 1868. Geographically situated at latitude 29˚29’50”
north and longitude 79˚26’ east of Greenwich Meridian at an
altitude of 6000ft (approx 1829 meters).
The splendid locale of ‘Ranikhet’ with the rolling and gentle
hills thickly wooded with spruces, oak and rhododendrons and the
omnipresent and majestic Himalayas, provide a fitting and
panoramic backdrop are almost idyllic with diaphanous streams and
sparkling brooks. The invigorating mountain breeze, the singing of
birds, the sights, sounds and fragrance leave the onlookers spell
bound.
During rains, flowers sprout up everywhere in myriad colour,
branches of tress stoop down with ripened fruits and sunlight
peeping through the mist and crating a vista, endow an enchanting
effect. On a clear summer morning about 350 kms of Central
Himalayan Sierra can be viewed extending from
Western Nepal to
snow heights of Badrinath & Tehri Garhwal in the Further east. As
winter comes, the softly falling snowflakes cover the environs in
sheets of pure whiteness. The charm of every season is
irresistible in its own right. It is also the center of Kumaon
Regiment, and it has endless walks and motor Roads to every
Recognized Builiding and Bungalow. And this is what makes Ranikhet
a tourists paradise.
A glimpse of Kumaon’s dominant snow range encompasses a vista
of the highest peak of ‘Nanda Devi’ (7888 mts.), followed by the three-peaked beauty –‘Trishul’
(7120 mts) and ‘Nanda Kot’ (6861 mts) along with many more peaks. |
